Death would have been better than bondage for the rest of her life, Anne-Marie thought. Between the blood oath and marriage, her future was more a life sentence than a life. As angry as Richard was with her, even prison would have been better. She had never intended to marry, not until her looks began to fail her. And then, only as a last resort. Here she was, thirty years old and about to be married to a man who expected her to pay for the humiliation she’d caused him.

Afraid? Very much so. The High Plains was no longer her home, so she would find no sympathy here. And in Côte d’Or, Richard was a pillar of society, descending from a long family line. She would never convince anyone the marriage was invalid. He was well-known and respected, whereas she was a newcomer. It would all be put down to a lover’s quarrel.

At best, she could pray for a short winter and make her escape as soon as he took the fleet out in the spring. She would have to travel far and fast without one look behind. He would eventually quit searching for her, especially if she lay low and changed her profession.

Her one concern was the blood oath.
