It’s That Time of Year

My favorite time of year! Autumn. The scents in the afternoon air, the trees beginning to change colors, all the autumn fruits–think apples!

Where I grew up, autumn was a busy time, but fun. Everything was winding down for the year before snow fell in November. The last few vegetables in the garden were ready. The crab apples at the back of the field were ripe and ready to be pickled for a delicious treat atThanksgiving dinner. Fields already harvested need to be plowed and disced for winter. And apples were in.

Did I mention I love apples? I think that’s where Damiano in my Gambler’s Folly series got his obsession for them. (The series is written under my other pen name, Mellie Miller.)

Down here in the Southeast, the change is more gradual. Colors are not as vivid, since the first frost comes pretty late in the year. The majority of the orchards are further north from where we live. And with the wacky weather this year, we don’t have much in the way of winter squash or potatoes to harvest.

If you’ve read Master of the Fleet, you’ll see where part of this plays into the story in the harvest festivals. Of course, we never had anything quite as dramatic happen around our town. We didn’t have magical abilities either, which was a bummer.

But one can dream…

What is your favorite season? And what do you like about it?

Have fun out there this autumn. Enjoy the lovely temperatures and the autumn colors.

And remember,

Always Look For the Magic…
