Born in a village in the north of an alternate reality of England, where the church rules the country with an iron fist, Kerrick and Liora’s marriage is in trouble. Kerrick hoped for a warm and sensual relationship when they married three months ago, but nothing he tries brings passion to the bedroom.

Liora’s priest taught that women had very little interest in sex at all, but should not allow temptation to lead them to seek, or even allow, pleasure in intercourse, even with their husbands. Allowing pleasure was the same as being a harlot and would be judged as such. But her body betrayed her at every touch from this man she’d married. She was torn between her wifely duty to her husband and damning her soul for wanting to enjoy being with him.

Whisking her away to the seaside, Kerrick–who works for the church–hopes to reason with his wife over the role of women marriage. Her priest taught against the doctrine of the church, preaching heresy to the whole village. If anyone discovers Liora’s beliefs, she will be charged with heresy and sent to the confessors, to have the heresy scrubbed from her mind.

Kerrick is duty-bound to report her, but his heart refuses to allow her to be sent to the confessors. Once they were finished invading her mind to rid her of her heretical beliefs, she would return to him a shell of her former self, forever damaged by their radical mental techniques.

They soon discover this is the least of their worries when they both begin to develop mental abilities forbidden by the church. Contacted from an unexpected quarter, they flee from the cottage by the sea in the middle of the night, traveling to Wales to join a resistance they didn’t know existed.

Can they escape the long arm of the church? What will happen to her village? Will their marriage survive all the challenges they face?
