I know. I have to make a decision, but there are so many options! I could go back and work with Mistaken Identity. Or maybe Defender of the Red Dragon. Or how about The Draconii or Anya and the Mage?
You see my problem? Mistaken Identity is already finished, as far as first draft. But it needs a lot of editing. Picture a star system with two inhabited planets who are at odds. Someone behind the scenes is trying to start a war. Caught in the middle, captured in a skirmish is a young woman who teaches music. All right, she’s also a skilled martial artist and served in the military. Taken to the opposing world, she is offered a chance to help out the situation. Should she take the chance to save both worlds? And can she manage not to fall in love with the man who holds her fate in his hands? First draft is complete, but the editing is going to be a nightmare. I love the story, but it makes me tired thinking about it.
Or Defender of the Red Dragon. the FMC is a PA for an influential businessman. Her twin sister is an artist, who paints her a mural sized work of a her sitting on a throne, with a guard in front of her and a red dragon coiled around the throne. She loves it and can’t stop looking at it, filing away the details. During a violent storm one night, she stands in front of the painting, feels drawn into it. A large lightning bolt shakes the whole place. A wave of vertigo hits and she closes her eyes, only to open them onto a scene she’s never seen before. Where is she, when is she, and how does she get home?
Our MC loves swords and is skilled in fencing. On a whim he stops into a junk shop and sees a sword hanging on a wall. The owner has no idea where it came from or what it’s worth, so gives him a deal on it. He has friend at the university translate the inscription for him Defender of the Red Dragon. He practices with it, marveling at how it seems to know what he needs, even before he does. During a storm, he steps out of the gym with the sword just as a huge lightening bolt hits nearby, blinding him temporarily and making him a bit dizzy. When he can see again, he is in an alley facing two men who are threatening a young woman, who is not dressed for the era he appears to have landed in…
Most of the first draft is finished on this book, so it only lacks a few chapters and the editing. I love the concepts of time travel and a necessary long line of female identical twins to make the whole thing work.
Draconii is set on a world of heat, humidity in some places, and desert in others. Only at the poles is their a small area of ice and snow. Our FMC is a dragon shifter from an influential family. When she was very young, she was promised as mate to a young boy in another old family of shifters. She tried not to think of it, as she wasn’t particularly fond of the guy. But their was this other man, a shifter born without the ability to shift, she quite fancied. But there was no way her family would allow them to be together. She was already promised, and he couldn’t shift.
This one is a few chapters in, but needs much more work to finish before a first draft. But I like the story…
Okay, so those are the major ones which are not part of Mellie Miller’s series books. We’re working on some of those as well. But as far as the stand alone stories, which one would you choose? Are you a fan of dragons? Dragon shifters, or time traveling moderns who end up who knows where? A woman mistaken for military spec ops? Where both she and her handler take a gamble on the future?
Anyway, I’ll figure something out. In the meantime,
Always remember,
Look For the Magic…
